Literati Helps Stephen and Ayesha Curry Share the Christmas Spirit

As 2020 comes to a close, we bring you a heart-warming tale of people who came together for a fun, meaningful, and COVID-safe holiday donation event.

This past weekend, Literati helped Stephen and Ayesha Curry’s nonprofit Eat.Learn.Play. kick off the 8th annual Christmas with the Currys at Oracle Arena in Oakland, CA—home of the Golden State Warriors.

The Curry family, along with a team of volunteers, hosted this drive-through distribution extravaganza to spread holiday cheer in the form of resources for families in Oakland’s underprivileged communities.

Cars lined up to collect packages filled with nutritious food, treats, and a custom-curated gift box from Literati.

The Literati Family Box included one brand-new book from each Literati Kids club and a selection from the Stephen Curry Book Club for parents. Plus, every recipient was surprised with a collectible art poster by illustrator Yesenia, customizable bookplate stickers, and a personal note from Stephen and Ayesha Curry themselves.

This partnership was something truly special. Oracle Arena was filled with smiling eyes, hopeful hearts, and holiday cheer. There was caroling, dancing, and a lot of fist bumping—even Santa and Mrs. Claus joined in on the jolly festivities!

Turns out, Santa has helpers everywhere.

The Curry family believes that the ability to read well is essential for a child’s success in life. (We couldn’t agree more.) Eat.Learn.Play. provides the resources children need to reach their full potential—including healthy food options, quality education, and a safe place to be active.

Literati was overjoyed to support their mission this holiday season, especially after the challenges of this past year. Complete with our hand-selected children’s stories, every donation was designed to bring smiles to little faces, inspiration to young imaginations, and holiday joy to hearts around Oakland.

Special Delivery: Childhood Literacy with Oakland Unified

On top of the 1,000 Literati Family Boxes donated to the Christmas With the Currys event, Oakland Unified School District is helping us to share more holiday spirit: they held a concurrent donation event and will continue to spread the cheer into the new year!

Oakland Unified hired delivery drivers that were out of work due to COVID. These community members will safely deliver 7,000 Literati Family Boxes this quarter, along with fresh food and produce from Oakland’s own Central Kitchen, to families with remote learners. (Precious cargo perhaps only matched by the contents of Santa’s own sleigh!) These local drivers won’t need Rudolf to lead the way, but he’ll be there in spirit.

It may be the eggnog or too many gingerbread cookies, but we’re feeling the warmth all over after this partnership. And this feel-good festive force is sure to ricochet past the holiday season to make a lasting impact on childhood literacy. And that, friends, is the best gift you can find under any tree.

We ho-ho-hope this uplifting story warms your heart this winter, in that special way that we know stories can do. Stay safe and stay reading, from our family to yours!

More good news.

The Literati donation team has been working overtime this year, putting books into the hands of children in need at a time when they need it most. Through direct donations (thank you, Literati Kids members!) and our amazing community partnerships, we’ve been able to donate more than 152,000 books this year.

Heading into 2021, we’re continuing our commitment to increase children’s access to books in pursuit of the mission to increase childhood literacy.
